What are video splitters and multiplexers?

A video splitter is used to take one signal from a video source and replicate it over multiple monitors. The number of times a video splitter divides the signal varies.

A multiplexer is similar to a video splitter but allows several video signals from cameras or other analog video devices to be combined and displayed on one monitor.

What are the different types?

There are two main types of video splitters:

Standard VGA video splitters: Using coaxial-style VGA cables, they connect the target video source to multiple monitors.

Cat 5 video splitters: These allow multiple targets to be extended up to 820ft from the video source.

The most common video multiplexers have four, eight, nine, or sixteen channel inputs. They can either be simplex or duplex.

Simplex multiplexer: These only handle the camera inputs and draw them together into a single output which is transferred to an output, like a monitor or recording device.

Duplex multiplexer: Has the same capability as the simplex multiplexer, including recording from all the camera inputs, as well as displaying the recording simultaneously.

What are video splitters and multiplexers used for?

Standard VGA video splitters are often used in classrooms, at tradeshows and conferences, sports games, and airports because they effectively replicate the same image/display on several monitors.

Cat 5 HDMI video splitters are used in similar applications, but they are often better suited for applications where distances are greater, and more monitors are required.

HDMI multiplexers are used in several applications, including providing a camera signal on a video channel to a television, configuring camera recording, CCTV surveillance, automatic camera detection, as well as a variety of media and broadcasting applications.

How to choose which video splitter or multiplexer to use?

When deciding on which video splitter you require, you must consider the resolution. It must be possible for the source and displays to accommodate and adjust to the same resolution. In most cases it will be the lowest common denominator for all the HDMI devices active.

When considering which video multiplexer to choose, you should decide how many camera inputs you'll need, while taking into account future changes e.g., expansion. You should also look for a time and date stamp, an alarm output, motion detection, and compatibility with your computer software and black-and-white or color cameras.
